BOOK REVIEW: Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini (Starcrossed #1)

Publication Date: May 31, 2011
Synopsis (Goodreads):
How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.
As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Review:

I heard about the book but I have no idea what it is about. I had the terrible mistake to just assume it was a mermaid book because of the cover. So I was excited that I finally had my hands on a mermaid book and to my dismay, it wasn't anywhere near mermaids. Oh well. I'm still glad I picked this up because I really enjoyed reading it!

In the beginning, the protagonist, Helen is someone who lacks self-confidence despite being beautiful- inside and outside. She underestimates herself and does everything average. Until one day, she meets a guy who's new to the island and she starts attacking him. She literally tries to kill him and she doesn't know why. This guy is Lucas, one of the guys from the Delos family. Then eventually she learns who she is and what her capabilities are. I did like her because she has a great personality. I accept her flaws 'cause she's still have the right to act like a teenager.

The male counterpart of Helen is Lucas. I don't even know how to describe him because all I can think of is that he's gorgeous, with god-like features. I like him but there were parts where he can't make up his mind that I started getting annoyed with him.

I like the complication of the love story between Helen and Lucas; starcrossed lovers- Romeo and Julietish kind of story. What I didn't like is how both characters responded to the complication. I know the romance is an important part of the story but I like it better if it's turned down just a little bit.

I like all the supporting characters but I especially love Claire, Helen's bestfriend. I love her relationship with Helen. She's such a true friend. She's honest and she was there for Helen through thick and thin. She's so cute, we have the same height by the way, but that's not important. I just like her! She's so funny!

The Delos family also took a big part of the story. I like how they portrayed the importance of family relationship by sticking together as one and respect for each family member. Everybody else may let you down, but your family won't.

It was narrated in 3 different POV's, I think, but mostly it was Helen's. There were parts where I was confused as to who's narrating and I just realized who after reading some of the lines.

This is good for a debut novel so I commend the author for that. History, action, drama, romance and humor all in one book!

If you're a fan of Greek mythology, this one's for you! :)

Rating:
FUN and EXCITING READ!

Memorable Quotes:

"She'd just been so busy looking she hadn't thought to feel."

"Is that how tall you are without those ridiculous shoes?" he said derisively. "I think I was born bigger than that."
"I bet you were. Five feet of fat head and two inches of ass," Claire muttered, standing up.

BOOK BREAK: Music in YOU (#5)

Every week, I will post some original songs from an artist who became popular in YouTube. I just feel that more people should know them because they are very talented and they have great songs that should be heard.

For this week I chose someone who recently became a contestant in The Voice but unluckily, he was eliminated in the battle rounds. Aww.. He doesn't have a big powerful voice but he has his own sound which has an RnB feel on it. He's a Filipino/American singer/songwriter from Anchorage, Alaska. So with no further ado, he's none other than JR Aquino.

The reason why I became a fan:

And his latest cover:

What do you think? He's good right?!

Blurb: Anna Whitt, daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a claim. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

Back to Reading!!!

I haven't read any book for weeks now because I've been thinking about my job application. Another is my moving from our home to my Uncle's because it's near the hospital where I applied. And this morning, they called me that I'm in! Yey! :) I'm happy but a bit sad because I'm leaving my family and friends behind. I can't see them often now. :(
I'm also nervous because it's been months since I worked in a hospital, with patients and everything. Oh well! Goodluck to me.

I made some hard decisions these past few days and I don't know if those were the right ones but hopefully I can cope up and adjust with my new lifestyle. No love life again for now. Haha! That's okay. I'm used to it. They come and I'm always the one who goes away. Bad me!

Anyway, because I don't have to think of any exam or interview, I was able to start reading again. What I'm reading now is Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini and so far, so good!

BOOK REVIEW: The Dark Light by Sara Walsh

Date Published: August 28, 2012
Synopsis:

Mysterious lights have flickered above Crownsville for as long as Mia can remember. And as far as she’s concerned, that’s about the only interesting thing to happen in her small town.

That is, until Sol arrives. Mia’s not one to fall for just any guy, but she can’t get Sol—or the brilliant tattoo on his back—out of her mind.

Then Mia’s brother goes missing, and Mia’s convinced that Sol knows more than he’s sharing. But getting closer to Sol means reevaluating everything Mia once believed to be true. Because Sol’s not who Mia thought he was—and neither is she.

______________________________

Review:
Before I started reading, I didn't really know what to expect. The synopsis don't give away much right? So I was excited to learn what are the secrets behind those lights and the guy with a big tattoo on his back. I made a theory that this is about an alien invasion and the guy is one of the aliens from another world. Well.. I am absolutely wrong! But right in some sense. STOP! No spoilers! Haha!

First thing, I love the cover! It instantly caught my attention. Who wouldn't? With the eye-candy sexy back.

The book has a unique storyline which is why I love it. I can't think of any book to compare it to. It started in a slow pace and I got a bit bored because I really want to know what the book was about. Yeah I know, impatient me. But looking back, I realized that the author took the time to describe Mia's world and the life in Crownsville. As I move on to every page and chapter, it kept me interested especially halfway through the book with all the action and revelations.

I like Mia's character, the protagonist. From the beginning, you'll know that she's a great person. She grew up without her parents, just with her Uncle and her brother,Jay. She's just a highschool student  but she sees to it that she's always there to look for her brother. She loves her brother very much that when he went missing, she decided that she'll do everything just to get him back. She's strong-willed and acts according to her instincts.

Then the hot tattooed guy is Sol. Aside from being good looking, his personality is exceptional. He may be odd at first and you may doubt his intentions, but you will like him as you get to know him more. I like how the mystery about him was uncovered little by little.

The relationship between Mia and Sol was predictable (the romantic part) but it's still sweet and fun.

The other supporting characters are also likable. I can still remember all of them so it's a good thing. Of all the supporting,I especially like Delane,Sol's friend. I like that he's honest, kind and dependable.

*Irrelevant thought. You may skip this part! There's a point where I thought there will be a love triangle between the three but oh well. After all, it's unnecessary. Mia will still end up choosing Sol. It's always like that. What the! I'm just contradicting myself. LOL*end*

Overall, I like it! It was a fun and wonderful adventure! I feel that there will be a sequel of this. I like how it ended but there's some unfinished business. I'm still unsatisfied with the antagonist. It's like he's there but he's never there. I need more! Please Sara, will there be sequel?

Rating:
UNIQUE and A GOOD READ!

Memorable Quote:

"You see, no matter how life changes, some things always stay the same."

*I won the book from All Things Urban and Fantasy's Deadly Destinations giveaway so I just want to say thank you! Especially to Sara Walsh for the signed hardcover copy and bookmark.

Title: Altered (Altered #1)
Author: Jennifer Rush

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Thoughts:

BOOK BREAK: Music in YOU (Post #4)

Every week, I will post some original songs from an artist who became popular in YouTube. I just feel that more people should know them because they are very talented and they have great songs that should be heard.

Sorry I haven't posted any for two weeks I think so I'll choose two artists for this week. I'm in love with acoustic genre and these two artists I chose are great singers and acoustic players.

First one will be Joseph Vincent. He's a Fil-Am singer/ songwriter. He's really cute and I love his voice. I can't remember how I found him but I've been a fan for years now.

Here's one of his original songs S.A.D. (Single Awareness Day)

And one of my favorite covers:

Next artist became a contestant in American Idol Season 9 so you may have heard about her. She's none other than Tori Kelly! She has a high pitched voice and it really suits her! I love her original songs  All I Wanted and Dear No One.

Lastly, this cover of the song I think is the best one out there.

Happy Listening! :))

Waiting on Wednesday (#3)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication “can’t-wait-to-read” selection is:
Title: Reaper
Author: L.S. Murphy
Expected Publication: January 7,2013
Synopsis:
There's no way sixteen year old Quincy Amarante will become the fifth grim reaper. None. Not over her shiny blue Mustang. Her Jimmy Choos. Or her dead body.
She’s supposed to enjoy her sophomore year, not learn about some freaky future Destiny says she has no choice but to fulfill.
It doesn’t take long for Quincy to realize the only way out of the game is to play along especially since Death can find her anyway, anywhere, anytime. And does.
Like when she’s reassuring her friends she wants nothing to do with former best friend Ben Moorland, who’s returned from god-knows-where, and fails. Miserably.
Instead of maintaining her coveted popularity status, Quincy’s goes down like the Titanic.
Maybe ... just maybe ... that’s okay.
It seems, perhaps, becoming a grim reaper isn’t just about the dead but more about a much needed shift in Quincy’s priorities—from who she thinks she wants to be to who she really is.

Thoughts:
This is interesting because most grim reapers that I've read were males and for this one, it's a female. So I can't wait to read this!
